Reflections Inspired by ‘Tintern Abbey’ July 25, 2008

For this blog, students were asked to reflect on the following lines from Wordsworth’s poem ‘Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey’

‘But oft, in lonely rooms, and mid the din

Of Towns and cities, I have owed to them,

In hours of weariness, sensations sweet,

Felt in the blood, and felt along the heart,

And passing even into my purer mind

With tranquil restorations: – feelings too

Of unremembered pleasure’.

The students were then asked to respond to this statement and question:

‘In the city or in an enclosed environment, Wordsworth would refresh himself with thoughts of nature or memories of the countryside. Does this work for you when you are enclosed? Do thoughts of nature refresh you?
